How to send your child to school in Dubai?

There are a number of service companies that can take care of all your relocation formalities in Dubai, to make settling in easier for expatriates. Services include school enrolment, preparation of applications for scholarships and organization of school transport.

You can also contact the schools you wish to apply to directly. You need to apply as early as possible to secure a place, as there are sometimes waiting lists.

Documents required for registration

Several documents are required by schools. For the child, you will need : 

  • Passport photo
  • Passport 
  • Birth certificate translated into English or Arabic and less than three months old
  • Last transcript
  • Health and vaccination records

For parents : 

Sometimes, for the most sought-after schools, a letter of recommendation from a former principal may be requested to support the child's application. An interview with the child and parents may also be part of the application process, as may an entrance exam.

All fields of study are represented: business, marketing, engineering, media, medicine, finance, tourism... 

Higher education is not free for foreign students, and the annual fee varies according to the university chosen. 

To attend university in the United Arab Emirates, you need a student visa valid for 12 months. 

Schools in Dubai: Good to know

  • In Dubai, public schools are reserved for Emirati children
  • Children of non-residents or expatriates must be enrolled in private schools.
  • Most schools do not offer a canteen service
  • Uniforms are mandatory
  • School starts early and finishes around 1 p.m.
  • Most schoolchildren have an extracurricular activity for the afternoon
  • The basics of Arabic language and culture are taught in all schools
  • All schools in Dubai are accredited by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.
  • For French-speaking schools, it is possible to obtain a scholarship financed by the French government.
